90 rapes daily in country, CM Mamata seeks 15 days trial law from PM

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for stringent laws and the establishment of fast-track special courts to ensure swift justice in rape cases. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Banerjee expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in sexual violence across the country. The letter highlights the need for exemplary punishment for the accused and emphasizes the urgency of addressing this pressing issue.

Alapan Bandyopadhyay, Chief Advisor to the West Bengal CM, quoted Banerjee’s letter, stating, "It is horrifying to see that almost 90 cases of rapes occur daily throughout the country. This shakes the confidence and conscience of the society and the nation."

Adding to the urgency, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee pointed out that during the nationwide protests over the RG Kar Medical College incident, an estimated 900 rapes occurred across India within just 10 days. He underscored the critical need for a decisive action plan, advocating for strong laws that mandate trials and convictions within 50 days, followed by severe punishments.

Abhishek Banerjee emphasized that state governments must push for comprehensive anti-rape legislation, noting that "anything less is merely symbolic and tragically ineffective." The call for action is a stark reminder of the ongoing crisis and the need for immediate and effective legal reforms.
